I Fagiolini releases new album 'Victoria: Tenebrae Responsories'

1 March 2024

Album cover

On 1st March, I Fagiolini released Tomás Luis de Victoria’s Tenebrae Responsories, a perfect set of miniatures for just four voices.

Recorded in their rarely heard original low pitch by I Fagiolini its new album - the captured sound is intense and profoundly moving.

The special edition CD also includes readings by Robert Hollingworth of nine of Christopher Reid’s heart-rending poems from ‘A Scattering’ which won Costa Book of the Year 2009. This disc is the second in I Fagiolini’s new series on CORO comprising five new releases as well as re-releases to herald the group’s 40th Anniversary in 2026.

Victoria’s Tenebrae Responsories are in stark contrast to the burgeoning excesses of late 16th Century multi-choir writing in Venice which I Fagiolini won much praise for in its first album in the series – the world premiere recording of Orazio Benevoli’s ‘Missa Tu Es Petrus’. I Fagiolini’s second Benevoli album will be released on 4 October 2024 to coincide with its concert world premiere at St Martin-in-the-Fields.
