Novello & Company to publish Skinner Tallis Psalter edition
19 December 2012
We are delighted to announce a new association between the music publisher Novello & Company, part of the Music Sales Group, and David Skinner. Skinner has edited the Tallis Psalter and Tallis’ complete English Anthems for a book which will be available for purchase in spring 2013.
These editions mark the start of a new project for Skinner and his group Alamire with whom he will tour the work in 2013-14; Skinner and Alamire are seeking commissions for a new Psalter to be performed alongside Tallis’. The Tallis Psalter is not otherwise available; this new edition provides exciting performance opportunities for choirs the world over.
Many of Tallis' melodies have been adapted for modern hymnals and are still familiar; Ralph Vaughan Williams adapted the third psalm tune for his Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, and the eighth tune is better known as Tallis' Canon. The tunes have never previously been published with the complete psalm verses.
In 1567 Archbishop Parker published the Psalms of David in metre (or 'rhymed'), Tallis famously providing nine 'tunes' - in reality psalm chants in four parts - demonstrating how Parker's translations might be set to music. The Novello Tallis Psalter places Tallis' tunes in their original context, and allows, for the first time in centuries, a performance of all nine tunes as they might appear in the Anglican liturgy.
The volume also includes music for evensong: a fresh edition of Tallis's Preces and Responses, the 'Dorian' Service, the so-called Christmas Psalms and Tallis' complete surviving English Anthems including favourites like If ye love me. The selection is suitable not only for liturgical performance but also for the concert platform.
