The Idea of North

Contemporary vocal ensemble

The Idea of North (TION) is Australia’s foremost contemporary vocal ensemble. “A truly outstanding vocal quartet... a wonderful group to watch in performance. Truly a sight and sound experience of the highest calibre.” Don Burrows

The group won the prestigious ARIA Awards (Australia's answer to the Grammys) for Best Jazz Album in both 2013 and 2010, and also won The Harmony Sweepstakes, the largest open contemporary a cappella competition in the US. TION has performed at major events in arenas such as The Lincoln Center and The Kennedy Center, and has toured worldwide including festivals in Malaysia, Japan, Hong Kong, France, Finland, Germany, Korea, and of course its native Australia where TION records for ABC Classics & Jazz.

The group studied at two of Australia’s best music schools – two of the group at The Canberra School of Music and two at the Elder Conservatorium in Adelaide. They have also studied and worked with some of the truly great singers, arrangers and vocal groups including The Manhattan Transfer, Tuck and Patti, Gene Puerling (The Hi-Lo’s, Singers Unlimited) and Mark Murphy. The group has collaborated on live performances with some of the finest a cappella ensembles in the world today including: The Real Group (Sweden), Rajaton (Finland), M-Pact (USA), Amarcord (Germany) and Naturally 7 (USA).

TION appears regularly on stage with Australia’s greatest jazz musicians including James Morrison and Don Burrows, and alongside a number of international artists such as The Manhatten Transfer and The New York Voices (USA), The Flying Pickets (UK), and Take 6 (USA). TION frequently performs to its own sell-out audiences on tour, and at corporate functions and has appeared on national and international TV. The group leads workshops and masterclasses for pro, amateur and community groups and choirs (as well as for the general public), and has an extensive 'in schools' programme it conducts with high school music departments, both at home in Australia and in the US, Europe and Asia.

The Idea of North is Australia’s longest-standing and most awarded contemporary a cappella group in history. The Idea of North is Sally Cameron (soprano), Naomi Crellin (alto), Nick Begbie (tenor) and Andrew Piper (bass).

"A cappella is sometimes thought of as being minimalist, but when you can sing and entertain like The Idea of North, a band would just get in the way…” James Morrison
